Deciding if Air Regulators are Right for You
Air regulators are devices which are used to make the air in pipes flow smoothly. This is done by decreasing the air pressure in a system by redirecting the current. This serves two purposes, to make the pipes operate efficiently and to minimize strain on the equipment, thus extending the life of the pipes. The valves on the air regulators are opened and closed by turning a handle to do so. More modern regulators like the electric air regulator, include a digital panel which is used to control air pressure release more precisely and accurately.
Air regulators are used mainly for lowering pressure by regulating air flow. All models of air regulators, with the exception of those found on an electric model rely on a simple process to set or modify the pressure. For this to be done, an adjustment knob needs to be turned in one direction in order to lower the pressure, while raising the pressure set level by also turning another other knob. Air regulators also reduce air contained in the tank of scuba-diving gear. It cuts off air when it has maintained the ideal pressure. For this to be done, air enters a chamber by way of the regulator. Air regulators can also modify air pressure by using a screw to move the inner valve. After this process, in order to close the valve, a spring back needs to be compressed twice. Usually after an adjustment, there are fluctuations in velocity.
Air regulators are not built perfectly and a slight problem with this instrument can cause a lot of damage to your equipment, and may even ultimately cause loss of lives. Selection of this type of device should be carefully made for this purpose. These devices are used in Scuba Diving and paintball equipment, as well as air supplies in a hospital. There are different types of air regulators, such as diaphragm, piston, balanced and unbalanced. A Diaphragm regulator is more sensitive in relation to pressure changes and more so in low pressure applications. Piston regulator is used with pressure in excess of 35 bars, and can also be used on lower pressure. It consists of fewer moving parts and can go for long periods before servicing. This also imparts a stronger flow of air than the others, and is one of the simplest of regulators.
The balanced air regulators are able to impart air flow which is not from a pressure source. The source described, being a compressor. This gives a more consistent flow and is the type of regulator found in scuba diving gear, where constant air flow is needed. Unbalanced air regulators are a step down from a balanced regulator, since the task of breathing becomes increasing difficult as the tank pressure is lowered, or there is an increase in the depth. In comparison to this type of air regulators, A balanced regulator is preferred by many persons over the unbalanced, even though the unbalanced is deemed to be the more economical of the two.
